Safari Jackets & Vests FAQs
Do I really need warm clothing for an African Safari?
Yes. The temperature in some safari destinations drop to freezing temperatures. A safari jacket, puffer, or warm layer is essential all year round. On the back of open game viewers or on the water for boat-based safaris, you will be out in the open in sometimes windy conditions, so it is a good idea to prepare for very cold conditions. Early mornings and evenings are also usually cool to cold on safari.
What kind of warm layer should I take on safari?
To prepare for a range of very different temperatures, the trick to dressing for safari is to wear layers so you can adapt as the day heats up. We recommend the following layers:
- A base layer that could be your long-sleeved safari shirt or T-shirt.
- A middle layer.
- A warm outer layer.
What color should a warm layer be when shopping for a safari?
Always stick to safari-friendly, neutral colors like khaki, brown, tan, and olive green. These colors blend into the bush, making you less conspicuous to wildlife. Avoid camouflage designs as this is illegal in some countries.
Can I wear my hiking or ski jacket on safari?
You can wear any jacket in a safari-friendly color. Give some consideration to weight, as it may be better to invest in a safari jacket or puffer that is ultra-lightweight and insulating. Also, avoid any jacket that will be creaky or squeaky on bumpy roads or whenever you move.
How cold does it get on safari?
The answer depends on the location and the time of year. Winter can be very cold in some of these destinations, with below freezing temperatures recorded in some locations - including desert regions. High altitude regions also plunge to freezing temperatures. The wind chill factor is increased by being on the back of open game viewers. All year round, we recommend packing a safari-suitable warm jacket, puffer, or fleece sweater.
Do lodges or safari camps provide blankets on game drives?
Some lodges and camps have blankets, ponchos, hot water bottles, or rain jackets for guests on their game viewers. For mobile safaris, self-drive safaris, bush camps, and between drive chills, it is important to always have your own warm layer on hand.
How many warm items should I pack for my safari?
We recommend packing one warm outer layer for your safari, with 2-3 interchangeable mid and baselayers.
